MARCH 13
The Genesis Block
The Day the Escape Hatch Opened
The Signal
As the old financial system was rescued from its own mistakes, Bitcoin began with rules that did not need rescuing.
The Reading
In 2008, the financial world began to break. Banks had turned risky home loans into investments and sold them around the world. Rising house prices hid the danger. When prices fell, borrowers defaulted and those investments collapsed. Banks stopped trusting one another. Lending froze. Businesses failed. Workers lost jobs. Families lost homes and savings.
Behind every number was a person. A lost job meant a mortgage unpaid. A failed business meant years of work gone. A foreclosure forced a family from its home. The people who trusted the system carried its failure.
Governments chose to rescue institutions with public money, guarantees and enormous financial support. The institutions were rescued. Millions of ordinary people were not. Trust had failed, yet the world was told to keep trusting the same system.
Then came January 3, 2009. Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin’s Genesis Block. Genesis means beginning. It was block zero, the first page of a new monetary record. No bank opened it. No government approved it. No company owned it. The Genesis Block began a system built around public rules. Transactions could be checked. The record could be copied. New bitcoin could only enter according to rules everyone could see. No bank manager, politician or central authority could give themselves special treatment or rewrite the record to rescue themselves.
Bitcoin did not repair the old system. It opened an escape hatch from it.
Tick tock. First block.
First Principles
Promises fail when the people making them fail.
Public rules allow everyone to check the same answer.
The Genesis Block began money designed to operate without a master or rescuer.
Today’s Challenge
Go to the kitchen and find a measuring cup. Fill it to the one cup line.
Now imagine someone could move that line whenever they wanted more. Would the measurement mean anything? No. It works because the line stays fixed and everyone receives the same answer.
Money should work the same way. The Genesis Block began a system with public rules that no bank, government or company could move for itself.
Look at the line again. Satoshi’s answer was simple. Make the rules visible and keep them the same for everyone.
Tick tock. First block.
